Jan Strejcovský is a graduate of the FAMU (Film and TV School of Academy of Performing Arts in Prague) master's programme (MgA) in documentary filmmaking.
He has directed several documentaries so far. One of his first shorts was describing the phenomenon of too young self-made men in the Czech section of the financial advisory corporation OVB and triggered a nationwide discussion resulting in legal accusations. His second grade documentary tells the story of Igor Chaun, the talented former film director, who devoted himself to creating an esoterical empire.
He finished his bachelor degree with a polemical road movie Powerlessness of the Powerful cruising among various actors of the postcommunistic development in Czech Republic, for instance the major economist Tomas Sedlacek or current president Milos Zeman.
Besides student films, he participates in collaborative projects for Czech Television: directed the episode dedicated to the subculture of Cosplay (fans of the film and comic disguises) in the Tribes series and co-directed with Robin Kvapil the episode dealing with Milos Zeman in a series Ex- prime ministers. He was one of the directors of the Czech parts of the Europe-wide project Generation What and was working as a reporter for a literary review ASAP.
Jaroslav Fragner Gallery produced his next road-movie Made in Nature, wandering across marvelous architectural and sculptural interventions in the Norwegian landscape.
He is also an actor. Apart from several performances of theatre underground enfant terrible John Kacena (Meetfactory, Pilot), he played the lead in a FAMU graduate drama of John Brezina Maria Stock and one of the main roles in the Thomas Pavlicek’s feature comedy Cabin for Sale.
He is one of the Managing Directors of GPO Platform s.r.o. - an independent production of young documentary directors. Reformulating Grierson's GPO Film Unit to “Group Production Office”, it emphasizes an interdisciplinary collaboration.
His MgA graduate film Epic Complex (produced by GPO Platform) investigates in many thematic lines the phenomena associated with a perception of the majestic legacy of the most famous Czech painter Alphonse Mucha and his own - in many ways contradictory - personality. Once again a road movie with art historic topics, this time travelling to Japan with Mucha’s Slav Epic.
