About me
My interest in costume and theatre began when I was very young, and developed during my five year theatre course at high school. I helped my friends to choose the outfits for productions, and in my third year I made costumes for a comedy play set in the 18th century, because such costumes were difficult to find. It was the first time that some of my work was on stage. This was a very proud moment for me, and it was then that I decided I wanted to develop my passion into my career. I continued to make costumes for carnival and theatre, and in the last year of High School me and my friends decided to found a charity fundraising group. We organized many events for children and parades, for which, within two years, I made over sixty costumes inspired by Disney’s movies. Two months after my first big parade I was accepted onto a course for theatrical costume makers at La Scala Theatre Academy, in Milan. During this course I furthered my practical and creative skills whilst working at a professional level. During this year I learned to construct historical costumes, modify historical patterns, elaborate different understructures, develop finishes and final details, and launder, iron and clean all types of fabrics. I studied history of costume, ballet clothes, oriental traditional dresses and history of theatre. I also attended courses of historical mens’ tailoring, historical millinery and costume elaboration. The Academy also gave us the opportunity to do an internship in another theatre or costume workshops for two months. For this, I decided to go to the Sastreria Cornejo in Madrid, an important workshop that makes costumes for international movies and theatre. I wanted to do my internship there because I had the possibility to see a lot of costumes in their storage, where they had dresses of every historical period for men and women. Beside, during the year, the Academy gave me the possibility to do important internships at La Scala theatre and other theatres in Milan, as wardrobe assistant for both ballet and opera plays. For the first time I helped artists to dress up costumes in accordance with the desires of costume’s designer, and I did a high level costume’s maintenance. When I finished the course I obtained a contract to work at La Scala theatre as wardrobe assistant during the opera “Don Carlos”, where I learned to work under a lot of pressure, make running repairs and ensure the costumes were worn correctly, maintaing always high level work.In the last two years I worked as intern for many plays and ballet in Milan, and at the same time I organized on my own three parades and other smaller events with the fundraising group I’ve founded. I prepared all costumes, over sixty, for all characters, dancers, singers and musicians. Me and my friends decided the scenographies (we also constructed them), the music and the people who will wear my dresses. I was the head of the organization team, every moment of the preparation taught me to take decisions in a very short time and to resolve problems as quickly as possible. I managed everything in our group: the maintenance of costumes, cleaning, laundering and storing them, the wigs, the scenographies and also the outgoings.
The days before the last parade were very stressful for me, because I had to prepare so many things, and to organize many people, models, dancers and musicians, but the most exciting part of the work was the preparation of the parade day. We were in a small theatre, and we prepared over sixty models, whilst at the same time some friends set the scenography, and our little orchestra and dancers rehearsed. The room was full of colours, voices, sounds and the perfume of hairspray, and it was so animated and full of vitality that I was exhilarated. The parade was a wonderful and magical experience, and I was so proud of what we had achieved. In this experience I worked with many people in all different fields, I learnt to stay in team, to be friendly and kind with anyone and to work under a lot of pressure.
Additional skills:
I have good organization skills, I like work under a lot of pressure where I give the best of myself, in particular during reharsals and perfomances. I'm creative and easily adapted to changing situation. While I was working at La Scala Theatre I developed a very good attitude to work in a busy enviroment, always maintainig an high standard level. My experience for my local charity works gave me the possibility to develop my problem-solving skills. I can find effective solutions in short time and in creative ways. I have also strong make up skills.
