Location Scout Jobs in USA

What does a Location Scout do?

Within film, TV, and commercials, finding the right location for scenes that are filmed away from the set falls under the responsibility of the location scout. The important preproduction process involves the location scout recognising aesthetic goals of the script and researching suitable locations and buildings that would best suit the scene. On the visit, the scout takes notes and photographs to give feedback to the director and producer - being aware of their goals from the start.

The role doesn't require any specific qualifications, yet knowledge of the film industry and the production process is recognised. More often than not location scouts start off as production assistants; using their connections to gain their next positions. As a location scout, you must be a visionary with a good eye for detail, knowledge of lighting and framing, and most importantly, you need to be a people person who is good at networking and negotiating in order to secure the location.
