What does a Sound Editor do?

As a sound editor, you are a creative professional who will be working in the post-production stages of film making, another term for this is audio post-production. Within this time the sound editor is responsible for preparing and assembling all dialogue, background sounds, music and sound effects preparation for the final mastering of a TV program, film, video game or any production that involves recorded sound. Once that is completed, the next step is mixing and blending levels, completed by the sound mixer.

Another element to the sound editor's job is to work closely alongside the music editor or soundtrack composer to decide what scenes would best suit either original music created by the production's composer or whether a pre-existing track is more suitable. It is likely you would also be working alongside the foley artist to incorporate the sounds effects that they have produced, however, on larger productions this might be handled by the sound effects designer.
