Your Instagram bio is small, but potentially mighty. In just 150 characters, you get the chance to show who you are, what you do, and why someone should follow you. No pressure, right?

Your bio is often the first thing brands, collaborators, and followers check. It’s your elevator pitch and personal introduction rolled into one. Get it right, and it can open doors. Get it wrong (or leave it blank), and you may be missing out on opportunities.

If you’ve ever stared at your profile wondering how on Earth to sum up yourself in one sentence, don’t worry. Here are some real examples of eye-grabbing bios, why they work, and tips to help you create your own.

What is an Instagram bio?

An Instagram bio is the short block of text that appears at the top of your profile, underneath your username and photo. It’s a space to signpost your personal brand and to promote any products or services you offer. You get 150 characters, the ability to use emojis, and one clickable link.

For content creators, your bio should answer three key questions:

  1. What do you do? (Are you a user-generated content creator? An Instagram influencer? Does the account belong to a brand?)
  2. Who is your content for? (Are you looking to attract brands, fellow creators, or followers with a shared interest?)
  3. What should someone do next? (Follow you, click your link, or DM you?)

If you’re trying to gain followers, become an influencer, or work with brands, your bio should support those goals. In short: Your bio should make it obvious who you are and why readers should stick around.

5 great Instagram bios

“There’s no single guaranteed way to write a great Instagram bio,” writes media intelligence company Meltwater. “What works for one type of account might not work for another, so ultimately you’ll need to experiment a little to figure out what works best for you.” But there is at least one commonality: Great bios are always clear. Here are some strong examples:

1. Hannah Lowther

Why it works: It links out to Lowther’s podcast, gives us a taste of her personality, and signposts how to reach her via her agents.

2. Glossier

Why it works: The bio tells us a bit about Glossier as a makeup brand and then provides links to where you can buy the products.

3. Seema Pankhania

Why it works: The bio introduces us to Pankhania and her career, and shows where else you can watch her videos and buy her cookbooks. Links are included too!

4. Dr Alex George

Why it works: It clearly shows his expertise, values, and experience while telling people exactly why to follow him.

5. Louise Pentland

Why it works: It balances personality and a use of emojis with content expertise. It’s fun and has contact info built into it.

In every case, the bio makes it immediately clear what the creator does, which is exactly what brands and followers are looking for when they land on your profile.

8 tips for creating a good Instagram bio

If you want your bio to do more than just sit there looking pretty, keep these tips in mind.

1. Be as clear as possible. People should understand your niche within seconds. Saying you’re a creator is fine, but it’s better to say you’re a UGC creator, a beauty creator, or whatever it is you do specifically.

2. Keep it short. “Instagram limits the number of characters in bios for a good reason; nobody wants to read long ones,” Meltwater writes. Get to the point fast and keep things snappy.

3. Use line breaks. Make your bio easy to scan. Big blocks of text are a no. “By strategically placing line breaks, you can create visual pauses that draw attention to important points, calls to action, or key hashtags,” writes social media management platform Metricool.

4. Include a call to action. “Specifically telling people what you would like them to do is far more effective than dropping subtle hints,” Meltwater writes. “DM for collabs,” “Watch my latest Reel,” and “Resources below” all work. “Make sure you have a call to action,” writes online marketing educator Stephanie Kase. “Have it highlight the link in your profile.”

5. Keep SEO in mind. Using keywords related to your niche will help people find you. “As well as helping you to show up in relevant search results, taking this approach will make sure that people immediately have a clear idea of what your Instagram account is about,” Meltwater writes.

6. Use the @ symbol. If you work with various brands, have a podcast, or even another account, don’t forget to @ its handle in your bio. That will allow people to head to it with just one click! “Linking to other profiles and hashtags is not only eye-catching, it’s also useful,” writes social media management company Buffer. “Any hashtags or profiles you put in your bio are tappable – they’ll take you to that person’s profile or the Instagram listing for the hashtag.”

7. Link out. You get to put one link in your Instagram bio, so use it wisely. “Often you’ll want the link to be to your own website,” Meltwater adds. “If you don’t have a website and want to let people know about your other social channels, you can use a service like https://linktr.ee/, which provides one convenient link where you can list all of your other profiles.”

8. Use emojis. Emojis are a great way to save on characters. “There are few things more eye-catching than a well-placed emoji next to a block of text,” writes Buffer.

Your Instagram bio won’t magically make you go viral, but it will help the right people understand you faster. Remember: With the right mix of clarity, personality, and intention, your bio can turn profile visits into followers and real opportunities.
