Bryan Cranston aimed for a diverse crew on his new Philip K. Dick anthology, Electric Dreams.
For the longest time the sci-fi anthology bar has been set very high, by Charlie Brooker's exceptional, bleakly uncomfortable series Black Mirror.
The Netflix series has competition from one of the masters of sci-fi Philip K. Dick, the scribe behind Minority Report and Blade Runner (otherwise known as Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?)
Byran Cranston heads up an exceptional cast including Steve Buscemi, Anna Paquin and Vera Farmeiga.
The Golden Globe-winning actor also produces, and, in an interview with IndieWire, Cranston spoke of how he wanted a more diversity on his crew on this production.
“This industry is still predominantly run by men, white men, white older men,” said the Breaking Bad legend.
“I’m perfectly in that category. It’s then up to us to change that dynamic to allow for more integration of women, and people of colour.”
“If we’re lucky enough to get a second season of ‘Electric Dreams,’ I want to see even more diversity, I want to go even deeper. I want to hear different languages, and different cultures."
In the episode Human Is, Cranston pushed for women to take large roles in the production with Stranger Things writer/producer Jessica Mecklenburg taking screenwriting duties and Humans director Francesca Gregorini taking the reigns.
"I wanted to have a woman to write it, woman direct it, and a woman lead, and have that triumvirate [tell a story] about what it is to be a human being."
Electric Dreams is available now on Amazon Prime and 4OD and you can view the trailer below.
