The Washington Post reports that Hoffman, 80, sat flanked by director Barry Levinson, actor Robert DeNiro and producer Jane Rosenthal as a somewhat heated discussion developed between the two at 92nd Street Y in New York, US.

Six-minutes of footage released by the Post, shows Q&A host Oliver, 40, asking Hoffman increasingly uncomfortable questions regarding sexual misconduct allegations Anna Graham Hunter made last month along with events that allegedly occurred on the set of The Graduate.

Hoffman excused his past behaviour several times leaving audience members audibly groaning and applauding for Oliver.

But there were also several comments from crowd members who clearly felt it was not the time or place for such a discussion and that Hoffman was being unnecessarily grilled.

One awkward moment saw Oliver read allegations aloud from Anna Graham Hunter's The Hollywood Reporter guest column where she alleged Hoffman groped her on a film set when she was 17 in 1985.

"Do you believe this stuff that you're reading?" said Hoffman.

"I believe what she wrote, yes," Oliver replied, "because there's no point in her lying."

The four-time BAFTA-winning actor said: "Well, there's a point in her not bringing it up for 40 years."

Hoffman maintains he does not know the woman and that if they met it was “in concert with other people.”

This discussion comes as Hollywood deals with a spate of allegations against numerous entertainment industry professionals – all started by a story in The New York Times, which detailed allegations against film producer Harvey Weinstein.

Since then, actor Kevin Spacey has been dropped by his agent, written out of House of Cards and is undergoing investigation by Scotland Yard after actor Anthony Rapp claimed Spacey attempted to seduce him when he was just 14.
