After 13 weeks of competitive dancing in front of millions of viewers around the UK, Joe, 42, and Katya, 28, won the glitterball trophy in a close final, that saw them beat former ballet dancer and TV personality Debbie McGee and X-Factor star Alexandra Burke.

Joe and Katya scored a very respectable 118 out of 120 points, one point less than news presenter, Ore Oduba who won the contest last year.

Strictly has been running for fifteen seasons, and has seen previous winners including The Wanted singer Jay McGuiness and TV presenter Caroline Flack.

Despite being widely tipped to win and the bookies favourite, the Glaswegian actor expressed shock at taking the prize, saying he hadn't imagined winning in “a million years”.

Head judge Shirley Ballas said of his final dance: "You've done things I never thought you would be able to do. You have truly turned into a magnificent dancer."

Joe McFadden is best known for his work in television dramas like Holby City, Heartbeat and Cranford, getting his break on Taggart in 1988.

He told the BBC: "I've done little bits of dance over the years in the few musicals that I've been in, but they were more for comic effect than for showing off any dance prowess.

"I was particularly blown away by the exceptional standard of last year's three finalists Danny, Louise and Ore.

He said before the series: "I'm slightly nervous about the spray tans. I don't want to go the full oompa-loompa."

On winning, the actor tweeted: “Did that really just happen? Thanks so much to the people who voted for us, we’re so grateful. X”

The Strictly Come Dancing final was watched by 13.1 million viewers.
