  • Overview
Treasure Island is a nineteenth century novel by Robert Louis Stevenson that has been adapted for the stage countless times in many different ways. The focus of the story is young Jim Hawkins who comes across a map by chance which purports to show the position of buried treasure. Innocently Jim shows the map to Dr. Livesey and Squire Trelawney and together they naively gather a crew and set sail on The Hispaniola in search of the treasure. Unfortunately the crew they gather is full of reprobates and pirates including the infamous Long John Silver who bluffs his way on board with one purpose in mind - to gain the treasure for himself. Jim manages to uncover the planned mutiny but only just escapes from the menacing Silver - and with the help of Ben Gunn, who has been shipwrecked on a desert island lost in his own fantasies, Jim regains the treasure and Long John and Co get their just deserts. The madness of Ben Gunn - the threat of Blind Pew - the innocence of Jim Hawkins - the stupidity of Captain Smollett - all combine to make this adventure story extremely colourful and exciting to watch. And the menacing thud of Long John Silver's wooden leg permeates the story as Captain Flint, his parrot, soars like an albatross overhead.
