  • Overview
The Browning Version is a play by Terence Rattigan, first performed on 8 September 1948 at the Phoenix Theatre, London, in a joint performance with Harlequinade. The play is about the last few days in the career of Andrew Crocker-Harris, an aging classics teacher at a British public school. When Taplow, a pupil who needs Crocker-Harris to pass him so he can go up to the next year, comes to him for help with his Greek, Crocker-Harris begins to show his true feelings through his love for literature.

The original 1951 film version, starring Michael Redgrave as Crocker-Harris, won two awards at the Cannes Film Festival, one for Rattigan's screenplay, the other for Redgrave's performance.
