Two unnamed characters, a man and woman, live in a cold-water flat somewhere in New York. There is intimacy between them – the intimacy of desperation. He has been on a bender, found himself in a tub filled with ice cubes and somehow wended his way home. She has been sitting in the apartment for three days waiting for him, consuming nothing but water the entire time. He begs her to "talk to me like the rain… and let me listen". She finally opens up and expresses her fantasy of leaving and living a tragic life on an island paradise, a dream of splendid isolation, away from all the troubles of life.
