  • Overview
Pericles, prince of Tyre, travels to Antioch to win the hand of the king’s daughter. His task is to solve the riddle which spells out the incest between Antiochus and his daughter. Realising that he is in the trap of loosing his head as all the others before him, Pericles flees the country and starts a chain of incredible events, as well as a life long journey of escape, movement, tragedy, victory.
This fast road of changes befriends him with two new royalties: Cleon and Dionisa at Tharsus and king Symonides at Pentapolis and sees him through two shipwrecks at one of which he loses his wife Thaisa to childbirth. Her coffin reaches Ephesus, where a priest revives her. Thaisa becomes a nun and retreats to Diana’s Temple.

Pericles continues to Tharsus, where he leaves his baby daughter Marina in the care of Cleon and Dionisa who have a new-born of their own, Phileton.
Years later Dionisa, jealous of Marina’s talents surpassing Phileton’s, plots the murder of Marina. At the crucial moment, Marina gets saved by pirates and in turn sold to a brothel at Mytelene.
Pericles, thinking that his daughter died in an accident, resolves to eternal silence, solitude and aimless sea travel.
Back at Mytelene’s brothel, Marina uses her wit and talents to persuade her masters to employ her as a teacher not a prostitute.
Pericles’ ship reaches Mytelene, where the governor introduces him to the talented Marina, in hope that she will persuade him to speak again. Indeed she does, in which conversation all gets revealed, including Thaisa’s presence at Diana’s Temple which comes to Pericles in his fainted dream. The whole company presently move to Ephesus to indeed find Thaisa there, and thus the whole family reunited – they live happily ever after.
