About me
I am head of a large technical department of up to 14 staff. We are responsible for all the flown and mechanically moving elements in all RSC productions in Stratford as well as tours and residencies. We have recently taken on responsibility of anything suspended in the air not only in the theatres but in our workshops and stores. This means checking that everything is properly rigged using inspected equipment and abides by the RSC rigging policy that we have been fundamental in creating. As well as programming and maintaining our in-house automation system, we create bespoke automation solutions on a show by show basis including the use of hydraulics and pneumatics and are involved at the earliest design stage to enable us to provide the most practical and effective outcomes. We also have responsibility for much of the machinery of the new building including scenic goods lifts in two of the theatres and the hydraulic and pneumatic ring mains. My own duties include the organisation and management of the department whilst liaising with creative, financial and other technical departments to plan both long and short-term strategies. This year, for example, is the World Shakespeare Festival which is a huge body of work to plan over many different venues. There is always the challenge of responding to creative demands whilst trying to remain within realistic budgetary and logistic constraints. I am charged with setting the correct staffing and equipment levels within budgets whilst building in the flexibility to respond to changing artistic needs.
Health and Safety has been a major priority at the RSC over the last year. As part of the leadership team, I have been instrumental in bringing about changes within the company such as ensuring supervisors take on a greater responsibility for following regulations and take a more inclusive, practical approach to risk assessment. I have met with many other practitioners in the industry, particularly during the PLASA rigging conferences to keep up with all the latest developments both in safety and in the consistent application of industry regulations. I have disseminated that information throughout the organisation to assist in shaping our future policy, an example being the construction of the new RSC rigging policy.
