About me
I’m a recent graduate from Imperial College London, with a Masters degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. However, during my time there, I discovered the Imperial College Dramatic Society (DramSoc). This discovery revealed something of a passion for all technical aspects of theatre. Starting out hiding in the dark recesses of the wings to perform set changes, I was soon encouraged into a more senior Stage Manager role for a couple of productions. Soon after, the opportunity arose to try something else, and I became lighting operator – both on the board and follow spots. Although focusing mainly on the lighting for productions, I was also active helping out in other creative departments with some set building, band pit mic-ing and fly op-ing, as well as general equipment maintenance.
Aside from the shows, there were opportunities to get involved with lighting and sound for live events. Every spring term, a series of shows were put on by groups of students from different nationalities, to showcase different parts of their culture. This provided DramSoc with the chance to install a large lighting and sound rig in the College’s main hall, and provide on the fly lighting and sound operation – sometimes without seeing the full show beforehand, a challenge when operating the LX board, and even more so for follow spots. Other occasions did allow time for pre-programming, one of these leading to one of my favourite extracts from a show that I programmed, which can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9vEzA0TX9o
DramSoc has been a fantastic way to experience many aspects of theatre, and I have yet to find a role that I haven’t enjoyed. However, I have found a particular enthusiasm for lighting, and am looking to turn that into a successful career.
