About me
My name is Courtney Hayles and working within creative Industries is my dream job. I love the thrill from working alongside an ambitious team of professionals who understand and respect the importance of the arts as a voice to impact change.Skills
I have facilitated a wide range of projects, which have led to meaningful and long-lasting partnerships and foundations that are being built upon year by year.
In 2012 I co facilitated a successful bid for The Contact Theatre’s ‘Contacting the World’ festival, involving 12 different countries learning about each other with each other. This work spanned for over 10 months involving 80 young people and included a cultural exchange, sharing of traditions and delivering a sold out festival performance on a chosen topic by twinned nations. Since then, many of my cohorts have gone on to set up their own youth enterprises and continue to provide opportunities with a strong can- do attitude at the core.
Attitude
As part of my personal development I was awarded an 8-week fellowship on behalf of Winston Churchill Memorial Trust to travel to America (2013-14).
I had the opportunity to visit some of the top performing Arts schools in Los Angeles and New York to exchange methodologies and practices.
My project was inspired by my research into rehabilitative theatre and how the transformative power of the arts is used as a tool to aid successful reintegration into the community.
Experience
Upon my return I disseminated my information through a series of youth- led workshops throughout the UK, supported by live video links with professionals and natives of similar age to my demographic. This project provided some new tools and inspiration for young people in Manchester to explore their creative talent, and use it to develop a sustainable career.
I was able to bring the UK experience to the US, and share knowledge with leaders about our market, our creativity and our talent pool.
In an increasing digital world, a regional theatre should provide a tactile space that encourages audiences to connect with the City of Manchester.
I believe that theatres within their capacities should address their social responsibility, as to how they represent the cultural diversity and economic capabilities that often limit seats to a select portion of our community.
The balance can no longer be simply about what keeps the doors open. As a theatre of the 21st century, are you willing to lose people in the short term, to ensure that a more complete community strengthens its longevity, and can trust that they’re being thought about as well?
Lastly, I feel the true value will depend greatly on the actions of both the community and the institution to develop a more transparent dialogue, where both sides are respected and understood.
I am organic in my approach, and as a theatre maker I work well with the inevitable changes that comes with creating. This interest stems from my observation of people and how the mechanics of human emotion can stimulate a debate of self-discovery.
Through my practice, I work with the human first before the behaviour because we like to feel nurtured and comfortable within our skin.
I truly believe in the importance of the arts, in terms of providing a place for escapism, and also a way to better understand societal dynamics.
After spending much of my time working within education, I furthered my knowledge of outreach by networking with organisations that were keen to find new ways to tap into new audiences. This led to a promising partnership on a project called Cities of Hope (2016), where I was employed as an Artistic Director to co produce a large-scale art exhibition to raise money for the charities involved, supported by the students from Manchester Creative Studio (2013-Present).
I feel an overwhelming sense of pride seeing the positive impact the project has on the visual landscape of Manchester.
This is what I will bring to this role. My enthusiasm to bring the very best out of my students, my effortless knack for relating to our target age group and my strong abilities to network with new and existing partners.
