About me
My name is Derek Shepherd. I just graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelors in Theatre Arts and a minor in English. I was a big part of the A&M theatre department in my time there, and hope to further my theatrical experiences out in the real world.I started at A&M as a Computer Engineering major. During those years I learned a lot about how computers take and process data, the inner wiring and circuitry of computers, and most importantly how to code and communicate with them. I shortly found that this was not my passion, but those integral skills have helped me in my technical positions in the A&M theatre department. I primarily work with lighting. Coding with our ETC ION came very naturally to me from my background with computers, and I continue to learn new things with our board. I also have a lot of experience with circuits and electricity from my engineering background. This helps with the initial set-up and design for the lights so that they are positioned with the optimal use of the dimmers. I have extensive experience plotting these using AutoCAD. I not only get to practice this craft in the theatre, but my brother-in-law is an electrician who I help when school is not in session. Responsibilities with him include running and circuiting wire in residential homes and installation of lighting fixtures. I just left my job with the Theatre department at A&M as the student scene shop foreman. This job was very rewarding for me because of the interaction and teaching I provided to the students. I help instruct them in the proper procedures during the theatrical building process, and on top of that I also do building and painting of scenic elements.
During my first years at A&M I rose through the ranks of the organization called MSC OPAS. This organization’s mission was to bring world class entertainment to the Bryan/College Station area. Members of this organization were responsible for ushering and assisting patrons during show nights. I was the Director of Education Outreach for OPAS in 2012. This job was heavily based around supporting arts to children. During school performance on campus, I was on headset directing the other members of OPAS. I also organized and ran a one-day camp for about 200 fourth graders. In 2013 I was the Director of Internal Relations. Rather than being about children, this position was all about the members of OPAS. I had a team of three managers, and we continually planned events for the entire organization. Microsoft Excel was a huge component of this job because I documented everyone’s involvement with an intricate point system. Networking, team management, and customer service were just a few of the skills I took from OPAS and continue to use in my everyday life.
