About me
I am a versatile and flexible theatre technician and stage manager who enjoys pushing herself, and learning through experience: I take pride in the work I do and am dedicated to constantly improving myself as a team member and professional. My hobbies include Fell Running and Rock Climbing, where I combine my passions for the outdoors and physical fitness.
At the start of 2017 I took time away from work to volunteer with the NGO Lighthouse Relief on the north shore of Lesvos, assisting with the eco clean up of beaches ravaged by the refugee crisis, with overnight lookout teams and with the landing teams receiving refugees from the sea. As a team we were required to work quickly and professionally under numerous pressures; from local police forces, the weather and pressing medical issues whilst being calm and respectful to the people in our care. We often had a very small window in which to give the maximum amount of aid to vulnerable people, with whom we often shared no common language. You learn a lot about communication when you have to ask, without words, if you can put an emergency blanket under the clothes of a mother's child moments after they arrive, scared and disorientated, on a foreign shore.
I spent my formative years touring festivals with a cafe/acoustic venue which was highly influential to my ideals, and has made me a resourceful and confident person in the face of adversity: on my first turnaround, having just turned 18, I was amused that all the grown men were complaining about how much there was to do; I was relieved we had a roof over our heads, clean boots, and didn't have to follow strict hygiene rules whilst dismantling the set in the middle of a field. I still find this perspective useful: it can always to worse!
From early in my career I have been required to lead teams of staff, most often in turnarounds, get-ins and strikes, with all the responsibility of maintaining good practice, prioritising the health and safety of the team and working within time constraints, all the while balancing departmental politics and the strengths and weaknesses of individual team members, whilst also upholding the integrity of the show and taking pride in the end product of our work.
I am very comfortable working at height and work well on my own and as part of a team.
I have experience in double and single purchase counterweight systems, and hemp flying. I am at home working on the floor in shows, as ASM and crew, as well as stage managing in-coming shows. I have worked as DSM on both musical and straight theatre, with professional and amateur companies.
I have operated performer flying automation using Stage Technologies' Chameleon software and been responsible for signing it off as safe to use on a daily basis, as well as working as a freelance rigger for Edinburgh's All Or Nothing Aerial dance company using more traditional methods of performer flying.
I am confident with all on-stage aspects of setting up and running bands, from plugging up stage boxes and running power to sound check. In addition I am used to providing all on the day services for incoming shows, from procuring riders to arranging dressing rooms and cuing shows.
Throughout my professional career there have been many times where I have responded to situations which threaten the show: I have removed foreign objects from onstage, fixed props and mechanisms during shows, covered for various positions whilst people were indisposed, provided first aid between cues, and fixed mistakes on the fly when there was no time to communicate the error to the perpetrator. I consider this an integral part of performing my job, and pride myself on responding quickly and calmly to any such situation, and on my ability to balance health and safety against the integrity of the show when making decisions.
