About me
Kolbrún is a theatre director, writer and artist originally from Reykjavik, Iceland. She studied Theatre, Theory and Practice at the Icelandic Academy of the Arts and did her Masters in Staging Shakespeare at University of Exeter. She was a co-founder of artFart theatre festival along with a group of likeminded theatre makers in Reykjavik, for which she directed her first original play ‘Meat’ in 2006. That year she also became artistic director of independent theatre company Brite Theater and is to this date. Her directing credits include classics like Chekov’s ‘The Seagull’ at Iceland’s National Theatre and Ibsen’s ‘The Lady from the Sea’ at Gothenburg’s City Theatre (assistant); independent devised pieces ‘Nobody Dances with Themselves’, ‘King Lear’ and ‘Coriolanus’; college musicals such as ‘Hair’ and ‘Aladdin’; children’s plays ‘The Key to Christmas’ and ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’; original Shakespeare mash-ups ‘My Only Love Sprung from My Only Hate’ and ‘Shakespeare in Hell’; original play ‘Bitter Sweet’ and monologue ‘Chet Baker, Love’, shown at Bike Shed Theatre, and new writing such as ‘Notes on Some Persons, Starting to Crack’ by Gareth Morgan, shown at the Northcott Theatre.
Outside of directing Kolbrún has developed and taught drama courses at Mosfellsbær College and seminars at Sund and Kópavogur Colleges. She ran Iceland’s sector of 21 for 21 festival, celebrating Howard Barker’s work, showcasing her Icelandic translation of ‘Knowledge and a Girl´.
Additional skills:
Before Kolbrún got the theatre bug she owned and ran a vintage clothing and kitsch kitchen appliances store, was co-editor of Iceland‘s biggest music magazine, Sánd, played bass in a prog-rock band and wrote professionally about films. She's also developed a career in journalism and done quite a lot of waiting tables. As you do.
