About me
Multi-role theatre technician with specialist experience in performer flying, rigging, scenic flying, prop fabrication and scenic arts. While the bulk of my career has been primarily in live theatre roles I have specialised in flying related positions for the past 5 years as a flyman but to a greater extent returning to performer flying. This has been my main theatrical focus in recent years where I rig and install systems, train both performers and operators and direct flown sequences. I also work with a variety of automated systems to programme and operate effects.
Previously I have used my time in theatre to be something of a skills magpie, developing knowledge in scenic arts and prop fabrication which have been applied broadly across the shows I have been working on. Primarily used to provide a professional level application to the fixes required in live theatre but also including stand alone projects providing a full scenic repaint, prop fabrication and scenic refurbishments for We Will Rock You.
Away from skill sets I am passionate about challenging theatrical stereotypes and working to provide workplaces that are inclusive, welcoming and sharing. I seek to create environments where everyone can feel supported and encouraged to grow in both their ideas and development. Equally I always to seek to push my own skills, develop them further and add to them where ever I can while regularly questioning my own methods for alternatives that may provide better, more collaborative approaches.
Additional skills:
In addition to my work in theatre I am a freelance photographer, carpenter, woodcrafter, web designer and workshop leader.
I have been a photographer for almost as long as I have worked in live theatre, providing photographic options for live events, productions, products and weddings. While working across a varied portfolio my work carries and ethos of subtle, heart felt coverage that is as much about my person approach as beautiful images and is something that carries across into my other professional pursuits. I always seek to understand each event or the feeling behind a product, shooting with subtlety and a knowing that taking subject into account and adjusting makes for a better final product.
Carpentry is something that has developed primarily through my work as a woodcrafter where I use heritage Sloyd knife carving techniques to carve primarily spoons. What began simply as a passionate hobby has grown into a role as a designer maker, selling products but also leading workshops introducing people to my craft. Sharing these skills and any others that I can is something I am hugely passionate about, I also work very hard to challenge the idea that looking like an actual lumberjack makes carpentry easier which has greatly informed my approach to theatre spaces. Along side this it has allowed me to develop my carpentry to what I think of as a professional level of intermediate skills, while I could not produce a fine piece of furniture I am comfortable with a variety of joinery techniques, materials and tools as well as a deep knowledge on keeping them at their best.
Web design perhaps does not hold immediate relevancy to life in the wings it is a creative endeavour which coupled with knowledge of social media tactic and my photography provides a fringe benefit within any venue with an online strategy where these skills can be utilised to enable those goals.
