MUSIC HISTORY
HANDSWORTH ADVENTIST YOUTH CHORALE 1976–1983 Assistant Music Director, singing soprano and alto. I assisted in preparing the singers for and directed performances. Also formed a female a cappella group from within the Choir – Living Water who travelled throughout Europe.
Recording: Handsworth Adventist Youth Chorale – We Shall Behold Him
LONDON ADVENTIST CHORALE (LAC) removed , singing 2nd alto and 1st tenor. It was formed in 1981 to present quality music with a diverse repertoire to a broad audience. The Chorale have taken it’s own brand of spirituals, classical masterpieces, traditional hymn arrangements and contemporary gospel music to wider audiences in many famous auditoriums such as the Royal Festival Hall, Royal Albert Hall (Proms), Barbican, St, Martin’s in the Fields, Sorbonne (Paris) and Sydney Opera House. The LAC are also frequently featured in national and international radio and television broadcasts, and have also recorded on major labels such as EMI Classics. In 1995 we were The Sainsbury’s Choir Of The Year winners
Recordings: Deep River (Paradisum) 1985, Steal Away with Ruby Philogene (EMI Classics) 1997, Live In Australia, 2000
In addition to the above, I formed an a cappella female quartet, Heaven Sent who performed for many corporate events around London, and sang as a Jazz soloist with a three-piece band, for weddings, corporate events and Jazz festivals.
BLACK VOICES 2000–present This internationally acclaimed a cappella quintet are a collective of powerful women’s voices that were born and nurtured in the black church and thoroughly grounded in the music of an international black community.
From the oral traditions of Africa, right through to modern contemporary arrangements of jazz, gospel and folk songs, we perform music with feeling and understanding that deeply touches audiences all over the world”.
In addition to its global concerts, we plan, organise and facilitate short and long-term singing projects, with community groups, schools and professional choirs and groups around the world. 10 CD recordings to date
Also in 2000
• Became self-employed as a full time Singer/Musician/Workshop
Leader
• Took my first Music Directorship for ‘The Millennium Mystery
Play’ and
• Formed Vox Simba Community choir after a series of workshops
sponsored by the Woolwich Simba Project
VOX SIMBA removed A Community Choir that drew on talented voices from all over London. Originally set up in association with the Woolwich Simba Project, a community driven initiative, used the art forms of Black Gospel, Neo Soul, Jazz and folk songs to educate, inspire and thrill the many diverse audiences who have been privileged to hear them. I served as Assistant Music Director and sang tenor.
2009-PRESENT
Over the past 9 years, in addition to performing with Black Voices, I have been the Music Director to 2 community choirs, Chelmsford and Harrow. An annual concert has been established, which has proved to be a great success for both choirs. They have both become the ‘go to’ choir in their respective areas for community events. Performances include Camden Roundhouse, Stratford-on-
Avon, Civic Centres and workshops in schools. This year Chelmsford celebrate 10 years of its existence.
I am also facilitating workshops in prisons and detention centres around the country in partnership with Music For Change (MFC) and Music In Detention (MID).
I have also been involved in bringing singing projects to rural areas where access to music and community singing isn’t easily accessible.
With Black Voices and in partnership with Town Hall/Symphony Hall in Birmingham, I have assisted in establishing ‘Community Spirit’ which takes place at Symphony Hall in Birmingham. Now in its 6th year, Community Spirit gives choirs, who wouldn’t normally have the opportunity to sing in a big concert hall setting, the platform to perform a on a big stage in their own right, as well as performing songs as a mass choir submitted by each choir director.
The repertoire varies from classical to pop, welsh male voice to female barbershop, African Folk to English Folk songs and Gospel to Jazz depending on the preferred style of the choirs taking part. More than 400 voices have taken part at any given time, and the support from the community for this project has been beyond expectation.
I am now in the process of establishing a similar programme in London.
I have provided backing vocals for the X-Factor competition, the sound track to the highly acclaimed, Black Panther movie, Black Earth Rising and the Netflix film Jingle Jangle.
