REVIEWS:
SCENE ONE PLUS (Talking Heads - Bed Among The Lentils)
When they’re staged well, these monologues can quite literally pop into full technicolor life; they can draw you in, you become absorbed into the life of the character, you laugh, you cry with them.
And so it was with Bed Among The Lentils and Victoria Porter as Susan, a repressed and despairing vicar’s wife, as she reflects on her misspent life in the shadow of an overbearing, egotistical so called “man of god” who is oblivious of her as a woman and of her own personal tragedy. Victoria’s portrayal was seamless. We believed, totally, her story. She was the vicar’s wife confiding in us. Everything she did, every mannerism, every reflective pause, seemed genuinely of this woman as she gently sipped her “tea” and slowly and subtly descended into mild inebriation. She took us on a journey through the church and vestry, to Mr Ramesh’s shop. I believed I could hear the voice of her husband. She had me laughing out loud and crying. She was brilliant!
CARNS THEATRE PASSION - 5 stars (Gazing at a Distant Star)
The reveal of Karen's story, when it comes, is sudden and brutal, and then the superb Porter kicks up a gear in intensity. It is Karen, and Porter’s stunning playing of her, that dominates the closing third of the play. Quiet and understated, never overplayed, she gives a performance of white-hot fury. With every hand turned against her, she stands alone, unbroken and unashamed, devastated by guilt and regret, but never, for a moment, wavering in her utter, complete and unconditional loyalty to her son. She is a worthy standard-bearer for mothers of lost sons everywhere.
LONDON THEATRE1 - 4 stars (Gazing at a Distant Star)
The play started slowly as each character took his or her time to tell their interpretation of a story. This time given to each character developed and built a relationship with the audience. We were near to tears watching Victoria Porter’s performance as Karen. A mother confused and hurt by the disappearance of her son, Porter trembles as she screams in anger and shrinks in shame.
GREENWICH VISITOR (Gazing at a Distant Star)
Porter was magnificent.... Rowland's play is full of real humanity, balancing the despair of the protagonists with clever and witty observations about life... A claustrophobically intimate piece.
LONDON PUB THEATRES (14 July 2016) - 5 stars (Life Sentence)
The best piece of drama I have seen this year. Victoria Porter is perfectly cast ... a performance of startling intensity and grace from Porter, eschewing empty histrionics; understated, observational drama at its very best.... Every breath, every twitch of the superb Porter is imbued with humanity and humour. ...delivers a political message like a punch in the gut.
CARNS THEATRE PASSION - 4 stars (Life Sentence)
The evening stealer was Life Sentence. This superbly acted piece took you by the guts and wrenched you from your seat.
FEMALE ARTS - 4 stars (Life Sentence)
The high point of the evening. Porter's performance totally sells the play.
LONDON THEATRE1 - 4 stars (Life Sentence)
The most poignant play of the night.
REMOTE GOAT - 5 stars (The Duchess of Padua)
The lady herself is played by Victoria Porter, a powerful performer whose meekness at the beginning is contrasted with her passion in the latter part of the show.
HAM AND HIGH - 4 stars (The Duchess of Padua)
Victoria Porter is a powerful, intelligent actress. Constantly derided and humiliated by her brutal husband, she falls for a man who respects and adores her. Their doomed affair is both touching and human.
