Reviews for ‘Slap’ at Theatre Royal Stratford East, October 2015 include:
Theatre Perform:
‘Slap’ is loud, dark, comical, complicated, compelling, it’s the biggest bloody ‘slap’ to the senses any LGBT themed play has given audiences in years…It’s real, raw and edgy stuff, as funny and endearing as is tragic and overall a very intriguing piece of performance art…Alexis Gregory's performance it comes at you with greater ferocity than Hannibal Lecter on a wrecking ball, with the Stratford studio setting only serving to reinforce the intensity of the script.
Reviewsgate:
‘The play is funny and enlightening and given the material, the ghost of Joe Orton hovers ever so faintly over it all, but that said, Gregory whose first play this is, proves his own man…As Dominique, Alexis Gregory stalks the stage in an amazingly revealing black corset and killer heels delivering a terrific performance’.
Broadway World:
‘Not for the faint hearted…this play doesn’t disappoint…Alexis Gregory's play hits all the right buttons to whip up a whirlwind of emotions and taking on the lead role himself he is mesmerising as Dominique…Despite being Gregory's debut play, 'Slap' makes a unique dent into the world of theatre’.
British Theatre Guide:
‘A full bloodied performance of great immediacy and an underlying sincerity. It is a bold piece of writing that takes unexpected directions'.
Younger Theatre:
‘Gregory stole his own show…Gregory’s bleak and black-humoured playwriting, combined with Beadle-Blair’s set design and direction, was a graphic explosion…like its namesake, Slap was impactful, with long-lasting repercussions for star Alexis Gregory’.
London Box Office:
‘Gothic heightened language reminiscent of veteran East end writers Philip Ridley and Steven Berkoff and several, witty Joe Orton-like turns of phrase and moments of comic absurdity…Gregory takes the lead role…he is terrific…channelling gay icons Beverley from ‘Abigail’s Party’ and Patsy from TV’s ‘Absolutely Fabulous’.
Celebmix:
'Brilliantly insightful and complex multi-layered writing...as a debut piece this is as accomplished as they come…You really need to go and see this play for yourself. Expect the unexpected. Get your friends together and join Dominique for an unforgettable evening at Theatre Royal Stratford East
