    Additional Skills

I love to ski, cook, and I can sing, play the flute and piano. I am also a trained ballet and tap dancer, and have received musical theatre dance training and singing.

My latest passion is vocal variety and dialects, after receiving extensive training during lockdown.

    Additional Information

I was born in Stourbridge, West Midlands, attended Aberystwyth University studying German, with Film, TV and Radio Studies, and went on to train and work as a secondary school language teacher in a school in the West Midlands.

I also co-directed a Software Development business for nearly twenty years with my husband, with whom I have three teenage children.

    About me

After moving to Stroud, Glos I joined RATS, a theatre group co-directed by actors Susan Lynch and Simon Chadwick.

I made my professional stage debut playing the lead in A Woman’s Life, written by BAFTA-nominated writer Carolyn S Jones in Cheltenham in 2019, and my professional screen debut in later that year, playing the lead in a mini docu-drama, Domestic Abuse, directed by former BBC broadcaster and TV filmmaker Sankha Guha.

I am now an experienced, professionally trained actress who constantly looks to learn and grow as my career develops, one of my strengths being of course the amount of “other life” I bring to my work, giving me the ability to create truthful, believable characters, in all sorts of scenarios.

    Industry Awards

    Reviews for Blue Raincoat:

“Emma Wilkes’ performance is compelling, beautifully understated and utterly truthful.”

Simon McBurney. Actor, Co-Founder/Artistic Director of Complicite

"Emma Wilkes performance in Blue Raincoat is quietly truthful and absorbing. She shows a superb sense of control in perfectly pacing this miniature drama to its compelling conclusion."

Bill Alexander. Theatre Director RSC, Birmingham Rep.

“This is a very watchable film. Emma tells the story and delivers the text with such ease, truth and confidence, you get so involved, it’s a joy. There exists a very fine line between no connection and over doing the emotions - it’s very clear that Emma has honed this rendition to perfection. Go take a look!“

Gary Owston. Senior Voice & Dialect Tutor 99 - 2017 (retired); Leader of summer school programmes - Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. Director & Principal - The Bristol Acting Academy

"You did great. I believed you/her. And I was emotionally connected.  Well done. Really, seriously, well done....You are good.  Particularly at the end....I think you are probably best when you are your most spontaneous. When you took time to think and remember as the character you were particularly good."

Steven Bernstein, American Cinematographer/Director (White Chicks, Monster)

"Very good. I thought it played really well. Very natural, spontaneous, living the moment. I was impressed overall by the quality of the performance and the range of 'tone-shift' in the delivery."

David Blair, British TV/Film Director (Care, Common, The Street)

    Acting experience

The past few years have seen me appear in various stage and screen projects. The play A Woman’s Life was made into a screenplay earlier this year, and is due for release in the new year. A few weeks into lockdown, I was invited to perform an extended monologue forming part of a set of 6, called Tales From The Edge. Blue Raincoat was released in Jun 2020 in aid of the charity, Acting for Others, and I received glowing praise for my performance from various eminent actors and directors (see above) Follow this link to watch the film: www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZtiQomu_Lo

Always keen to stay active and make connections within the industry, I joined the Everyman Actors Lab in Cheltenham in 2019, as well as the Inspire Actors Studio in B'ham, taking part in their professional masterclasses with various visiting industry professionals. Studying Shakespeare has become a passion of mine, and I took the opportunity later that year to join theatre director, Bill Alexander in his weekly Shakespeare Lab in Stroud. As part of my on-going development, I have benefited from world class tuition from tutors at The Bristol Old Vic Theatre School during my time with the Bristol Acting Academy. Learning how to take part in period ‘Social Dancing’ with poise and grace was a particular highlight.

Proving I can do comedy as well as serious drama, in 2019 I got the opportunity to co-star in a comedy two-hander play, Tess & Flo, performed as part of a charity gala, held to raise money for Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice.

December 2019 saw me fulfil another long held ambition: to experience the expertise and teaching of Complicité. I worked with professional actors from around the world during an intensive 3-day workshop, learning from 2 world class theatre directors, Kasia Zaremba-Byrne and Annabel Arden (co-founder).

Determined not to stop being inspired and creative, despite lockdown calling a halt to performing on stage and face-to-face work, to keep my skills sharp I now have regular online singing lessons with Bristol Old Vic Theatre School head of singing, Pamela Rudge, as well as weekly online dialect and voice coaching with former senior voice and dialect tutor at the BOVTS, Gary Owston.
