Review of The Seagull
"The Seagull, Lord Stanley, Chekhov"
by Paul McLachlan on 12/02/14
What a native Russian will do with a Chekhov play is always of interest. In this case the director Victor Sobchek chooses to show us less buttoned-up repression – so common in UK adaptations – and more sexual abandon. Here Dorn (Garry Voss) is a virile seducer and Trigorin weeps at his sexual subjugation as he is pleasured by Arkadina. Artistic success and sexual success go hand in hand. This is a play divided into winners and losers, some like Dorn and Trigorin achieving gratification and others such as Medvedenko and Konstantin faced with a future where death not life is the only conclusion. Ripeness is all. And it is a ripeness that some cling on to at the expense of others..
Gary Voss has plenty of attack as a younger than conventional Dorn. .

"Gary Voss, as protagonist Chichikov, presented us with some heartfelt moments."
Audience Club.
Paul Holden
"I was very pleased to catch this show on the final performance. I liked the adaptation which caught the essence of Gogol's novel very well, particularly in the wily character of Chichikov, played with considerable subtlety by GarryVoss"
Valentina Corcoran,
Chairman of the London Literature Club
"The premier of Dead Souls at the Theatre Collection was a great opportunity to see Gogol's masterpiece on the London stage. We found the production, which had been perfectly directed by Victor Sobchak, contained every important element of the novel.
Garry Voss did splendid work on Chichikov's characterisation and it was an absolute pleasure to see him in every scene."
REVIEW
by Patrick Farrimond. DEAD SOULS
"I thought it was terrific. I've never read anything by Gogol, so I didn't know what to expect.
Garry Voss did a perfectly balanced job of portraying the morally ambiguous nature of the lead character. He was 75% sympathetic and 25% villainous."
REVIEW BY Lucien N Morgan
"Dead Souls directed by Victor Sobchak, opened to a delighted full house at the Lord Stanley Theatre. It was the first time Nikolai Gogol's has been performed for the stage in the UK.
The strange story of the audacious conman, Mr Chichikov's adventures making money from deceased peasants has been brilliantly translated and adapted by Victor Sobchak.
Garry Voss's understated performance as Chichikov, brought the necessary believe-ability to this surreal plot and I found myself totally engrossed in this greedy and manipulative character."

Camden New Journal Review:
Master and Margarita, at Theatre Collection
--------------------------------------------------------------
Riotous entertainment: Master and Margarita
Published: 03 October, 2013
by BEL KNIGHT
BULGAKOV's magnum opus Master and Margarita is famously biblical both in proportion and location with the narrative threading between Classical Jerusalem and 1930s Moscow.
You would think that Theatre Collection’s production in the quaint yet diminutive space above the Lord Stanley pub would fail to do the epic nature of the novel justice. Perversely, the intimate setting actually lends a claustrophobic air that mirrors the unforgiving and suffocating nature of the times in which Bulgakov was writing.
However, it is Gary Voss’s performance as Ivan that stands out. His forced hospitalisation and incarceration are a stark reminder of the ruthless Stalinist stance towards authors whose work did not toe the party line.
The set is gloriously simple and the lighting and sound changes are done dexterously.
