Additional information:
I very much started in broadcast documentaries - its where I really cut my teeth, and I still hugely enjoy shooting many ducumentaries today and have many close relationships with directors, producers and production companies. Coming up in my career alongside factual storytellers really helped me shape an approach to my work which is totally narrative driven. I learnt early on to quickly identify WHAT and WHERE the story is, and more importantly - where it isn't. I feel very lucky to have had the chance to develop that skill as it has served me very well not only in factual, but in drama, commercials and all other things I have shot.
For the last half of my career I have focused hard on becoming adept in other areas of the industry. I've shot tons of shorts and a number of features so I've become extremely proficient in scripted drama. I hugely enjoy the challenge of taking a story from page to screen and love using complex lighting, texture, blocking, movement and all the other tools in the cinematographers box to achieve something truly unique and totally in tune with the narrative.
I have also now shot many commercials and on those I have been lucky enough to work with some supremely talented directors and with very large budgets and large crews. Commercials have really allowed me to stretch my legs as a DoP and create some incredible images using all the high end toys.
More recently I have mastered the weird and wonderful world of stop motion animation, which has been truly fantastic! Getting to work on a huge hollywood production on Wes Anderson's Isle of Dogs was a steep but very rewarding learning curve. This was a BIG studio shoot with a lot of very complicated VFX work.
I worked day-in, day-out on extremely complex shots and sequences with a mix of physical sets and elements, complex motion control rigs and a huge number of VFX elements. I was often shooting multiple components for the same shot across different stages, matching focal length distortion, lighting, motion control camera movement, and often all against 100ft wide green screens.
I would always love to hear about your new project so please take a look at my CV and website and get in touch!
