About me
I am a very capable and well rounded lighting designer/technician/rigger. I have just finished my fifth tour with the Caravan Stage Theatre Company as Technical Director on a replica London Thames river barge travelling the East Coast of the United States.Previously I completed five contracts with Celebrity Cruises working in the position of Lighting Technician/Operator. I am extremely versatile not only being able to design the lighting for guest entertainers but also maintaining large rigs onboard. I enjoy traveling the world and adapt very quickly to new environments and situations.
I have covered all positions within the theatre such as Automation Technician and Production Manager.
I work well in a team environment and am committed to helping and training colleagues. I am always looking for ways to improve my techniques and skills and the products I produce.
As a lighting technician I am proficient on both tracking and pile-on consoles, having worked with major Wholehog, Zero88 and ETC boards. If I have not worked with a particular console I am quick to pick up the programming skills needed. I am knowledgeable not only with a wide range of static fixtures but also intelligent moving head fixtures and LED equipment. Troubleshooting comes as a second nature, having to constantly adapt around a rig that is subject to extreme vibrations that come with working on the ocean. (I can replace and clean parts to keep fixtures working at 100%.)
I am constantly trying to keep up with new equipment in my field, and am able to put in the research and dedication to stay on top of trends. I have a passion for lighting design, whether colour mixing or multi cue building. I pride myself on my communication skills when discussing with directors and performers to produce the desired looks they require.
I have been responsible for running Broadway style productions; using Dataton Show control I have called automations, stage cues and spotlight operations. I am also able to operate cameras, routers, various projectors and laser systems that come with running a high spec production.
I am aware of safety standards and protocols that come with working in a theatrical environment. I have had training in fire control, bomb awareness and crowd management. When working onboard cruise ships I have had to manage and direct large crowds in emergency drills.
I am available to work as a lighting designer, stage manager or freelance technician for theatre, lectures and events; short or long term contracts which would include rehearsal and production processes. I am always willing to pass on my knowledge and skills to increase the productivity of a team.
Additional skills:
Collaboration, Team work, Communication, Decision-making, Initiative, Organization and Planning, Versatility, Wholehog PC programming, Lighting Maintence, Rigging, Flyers, Broadcast, Dataton, Set Design, Woodwork, Metalwork, soldering, plumbing,Stage Automation. Tall Ship sailing.
I am proficient in the installation and use of LED equipment having worked with products from Elation, Robe and PixelRange.
Referees:
Rob is highly competent in his work. He is hard working, reliable, flexible and takes great initiative. He has a strong understanding and sensitivity for all aspects of production. His skills are invaluable in both management and teamwork. I would have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending him as a Stage Manager, Technical or Production Manager.
Josh Elwell, Artistic Director of Wild Wood Theatre
Robert Steen is a hardworking, top-performing theater professional and I can, without hesitation, recommend him for any production, for any position he might apply for. I myself hope to work with him again soon.
Lutz Gock - Lighting Designer

Took part in the three week drydock of the Amara Zee in Fano, Italy. Working on the restoration of the hull. I have also worked on the restoration of the topside woodwork. I am a capable carpenter not afraid to put in the effort to help build a set.
