We are based in Kirkcaldy in east central Scotland.

During the past 30 years the Theatre Arts Team at Adam Smith College (previously Fife College) have been at the forefront of developments in Scottish Further Education and have started out a generation of actors, from Ewan McGregor and Dougray Scott to Steven Robertson and Molly Innes (to name but a few, see our Alumni section) as well as stage managers, technicians, theatre practitioners and drama teachers.

Our production graduates work at venues all over Britain, with Cirque de Soliel in Canada, aboard cruise ships and at various repertory theatres and companies. Many former students have articulated to complete degrees at drama schools all over Britain.

One of the most important things we do as a staff is to develop the ambition of our students beyond a career on the stage, by opening their eyes to other possibilities. Workshop skills, stage fighting and physical theatre, devising and directing abilities all play a part.

Beyond the coursework, we are able to offer significant additionality to our learners. This session, we have collaborated with the National Theatre of Scotland in their major community project “99…100” in which over 40 of our students took part in during November 2010, at Silverburn near Leven.

Our groundbreaking community drama projects and tours with the National Museums of Scotland, the Zero Tolerance campaign, police, social work, NHS Scotland and educational work led directly to the formation of our graduate Theatre in Education company. They have toured Fife with the Boozebusters and Healthy Living projects for six seasons, as well as taking on commercial projects with the Police Training College in Tulliallan and for Fife Social Work Department with “Vulnerable Adult Training”.

Every session we take our students on theatre visits, where they sometimes have the opportunity to have backstage tours as well as talks from performers and practitioners. Through the years, we have visited most of the repertory theatres and receiving houses in Scotland and this session, we are going to Pitlochry Festival Theatre, The Traverse, Dundee Rep and the Lyceum.

Visiting lecturers are important to our work and, over the years, we have enjoyed working with Jo Clifford, John Byrne, Michael Boyd (RSC), Andy Arnold, Mary McCluskey, Tim Licata, Ben Harrison, Mark Saunders, Judith Milligan, Lindsay John, Tober Reilly and Andrew Panton, as well as industry input from Frank Chinn and Lorne Boswell (Equity). Company visits from TAG, Scottish Dance Theatre, Rambert, Martial Dance, Fly-Boy-Flip, Vincent Hantan, Y Dance, Benchtours, Black Light and Northern Light have also enhanced our work.

Looking to the future, we intend to expand our horizons further – into the world of circus, HNC/D Dance Artists, articulation options with Napier and Queen Margaret Universities and further developments in community theatre.
