Channel 4 is a UK TV channel transmits across the entirety of the country, except some parts of Wales, which are instead covered by the Welsh language channel S4C. As well as the more traditional broadcast methods (terrestrial, satellite and cable) Channel 4 is available online as well in the form of All 4.
Channel 4 first aired in 1982 and is a British public-service free-to-air television network. Whilst it is largely commercially self-funded, it is publicly owned; operated by Channel Four Television Corporation, a public corporation of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. The channel is headquartered in London.
The network consists of 5 main channels:
- Channel 4
- E4
- More4
- FilmFour
- 4Music
The FilmFour production division produces and co-produces feature films for the UK and global markets.
The Channel's primary purpose is the fulfilment of its public service remit, which was most recently defined in the 2003 Communications Act. This states that "the public service remit for Channel 4 is the provision of a broad range of high quality and diverse programming which, in particular:
(a) demonstrates innovation, experiment and creativity in the form and content of programmes;
(b) appeals to the tastes and interests of a culturally diverse society;
(c) makes a significant contribution to meeting the need for the licensed public service channels to include programmes of an educational nature and other programmes of educative value; and
(d) exhibits a distinctive character."
As a publisher-broadcaster, Channel 4 does not produce its own programmes but commissions them from more than 300 independent production companies across the UK, a far greater number than any other broadcaster, including the whole of the BBC. It works very closely with the independent production sector, and invests heavily in training and talent development throughout the industry.
Channel 4 is always looking for new ways to bring its choice of unique programming to the British public. As part of this it offers 'Walter Presents' a VoD service as part of All 4 that shows foreign language dramas. It has also joined The Brit box alongside the BBC & ITV to create a streaming service that offers programming from all 3 services in one place.
Countless Mandy members have worked with Channel 4, as evidenced below. If you would like to find paid jobs with the production companies that C4 uses you need only sign up for an account and apply online.
