Debenhams PLC is a multinational retail chain operating under a department store format in the United Kingdom, Ireland & Denmark with franchise stores in 23 other countries.

Founded in 1778 by William Clark in London the store specialised in materials such as silks, haberdashery, hosiery & lace. The brand grew and spread across the country, changing name multiple times over the years. By 1905 it was officially incorporated as Debenhams Limited.

The brand traditionally focused on clothing, however in recent years has expanded its remit to include food, beauty, lighting and gifts.

The post-internet squeeze on high street brands led Debenhams to close 22 of its stores after Christmas 2019.
