DugOut Theatre was founded in 2009 by George Chilcott and Ed Smith after their Leeds University Theatre Group production of Journey’s End – the First World War drama is in fact where the name ‘DugOut’ found its origin.
Since then, the company has produced six plays and been to the Edinburgh Fringe three times. Dealer’s Choice was selected for NSDF11 and the cast earned a commendation for ensemble acting. Other shows have used the signature elements of Dealer’s Choice since – fast-paced dialogue, use of music and, most recognisably, stylised movement. In 2012, their first devised piece, Inheritance Blues, was selected by NSDF12-ISDF, and went on to win the Judges' Award for Best Devised Piece, the Cameron Mackintosh Commendation and the Festgoers' Choice Award for Best Show. Harry Williams directed The Birthday Party in Leeds in November 2011, and this too was selected for NSDF12-ISDF, earning an Acting Award for Phoebe Sparrow in the part of Meg and the Directors Guild Award for Williams himself. The company took Inheritance Blues and a new work entitled Cover to Edinburgh in 2012, with both earning very good reviews and Inheritance Blues selling out fifteen nights in a row.
