Futures Theatre Company was founded in January 1992 to promote plays written by women. It was during this early period that the company produced three plays that were successfully performed on the London Fringe. The company was also invited to take part in the first ever Wandsworth Arts Festival and this began a long relationship with Wandsworth. In 1995 Futures received funding from Wandsworth Arts Service to provide an artistic programme for the borough’s young people. Futures rose to the challenge producing a new musical play, Turning On. The play proved so successful it was toured throughout London for four years.

This also proved to be a turning point for Futures. The work with the young people was so rewarding that Futures began to develop new writing specifically targeted at 11-16 year olds. In 1996 the company registered as a charity and since then Futures has reached over 40,000 young people with its performances and drama workshops, working in 17 London Boroughs. The plays have been performed in Schools, Youth Centres, Special Needs Units and Art Centres.

2002 saw the first performances of the ground-breaking play Hitting Home. The play was inspired by Angela Ashworth’s acclaimed biography, 'Once in a House on Fire', and dealt with the very sensitive issues surrounding domestic violence. Futures was one of the few charities addressing these issues from the perspective of the child at the time. The production was so successful it toured again nationally in 2002 and was used at Barnado’s Scottish Conference launching their work around similar themes.

This was followed by school and venue tours of plays dealing with racism (Race To Change Face, 2003/2004) and bullying (Fear To Bully, 2005/2006). Futures have recently completed a UK tour with their redeveloped version of Hitting Home which performed at small/mid scale arts venues in May/June 2008.
