Former actor turned director/producer Ian Dickens first approached Gary Iles, Swansea Grand Theatre manager, in 1997 to try and reintroduce a repertory season at the theatre – so much a staple of the John Chilvers era, which had been missing since the late 1980’s. On getting the green light from Gary, Ian assembled a group of professional stage actors and put on a season of four plays starting with “Educating Rita” on July 29th 1997 – just a couple of days after the theatre’s Centenary. The success of the season led to another in 1998 this time with five plays, then 1999 and gradually the tradition of Repertory theatre at Swansea was re-established. In 2010 Ian will bring his 70th Production to Swansea, although the format is slightly different today as each play is a touring production and will have a headlining name from television, which comes to Swansea and goes on to other theatres in the provinces. Nevertheless it provides the opportunity to see locally, a pick and mix of drama, comedy and murder mysteries, which you would otherwise have to visit the West End to see. Popular performers to have appeared in Ian Dickens Productions include Leslie Grantham, Hannah Waterman, David Janson, Sabina Franklyn, David Callister, Frazer Hines, Giles Watling, Deborah Watling, Dilys Watling, Jonathan Morris, Carmen Silvera, David Griffin, Ruth Madoc, Fenella Fielding and countless others. Special mention must also go to Technical Director David North and Productions Coordinator and Director Caroline Burnett who have been with Ian since the beginning and help keep things running like a well oiled machine. Today Ian Dickens Productions Limited have a turnover in excess of 3 million pounds, with over 7 touring productions on the road at any one time. In 2009 they took over the running of the Lincoln Theatre Royal, which then became the base for their touring productions.
