The Lyric Drama Studio is an intensive 6 month course for young people aged 18 to 25 who have a serious aspiration to work in professional theatre.
The concept of Drama training was central to Mary O’Malley’s original vision of the Lyric Theatre and the Drama Studio, in one form or another, has been running for over 50 years. The project aims to nurture and develop young people who are serious about entering the professional theatre and just as former incarnations of the Drama Studio did exactly this for a generation of actors who were to become regulars on the old Ridgeway Street stage, the project continues to do the same in our new building.
The six-month programme consists of weekly skills-building workshops and master-classes in Voice, Movement and Acting Technique delivered by experienced teachers and theatre practitioners. In addition, we have a range of visiting artists and theatre practitioners in, for example, Stage Combat, Radio Drama & Improvisation with expert advice available on applying to Drama School.
The course culminates in a production in the Naughton Studio, following an intensive series of rehearsals. Previous productions have included Caryl Churchill’s Light Shining in Buckinghamshire, Timberlake Wertenbaker’s Our Country’s Good and Howard Brenton's 55 Days.
In September 2014, 6 recent members of Drama Studio will take up places at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in Cardiff, The Lir Academy in Dublin and East 15 and Guildhall in London.
The course is offered free to those who have been successful at audition.
There are around 12 places offered every year, following successful audition.
Applications for next years intake will be available to download from our website from May 2014.
The closing date for returned applications is Monday 4th August.
Auditions will take place between 14 - 16 August 2014, and Saturday 23rd August for recall workshop.
