he company was founded in 1982 by its current Artistic Director, Jonathan Holloway, and theatre designer, Charlotte Humpston. Both were concerned to make a space for a form of theatre which drew on European influences to marry traditional narrative and character based drama with art-house performance employing ambitious design, image and spectacle.
The result was to bring accessible story-based theatre characterised by innovative and unusual use of the actors' physicality and the manipulation of designed objects to a broad audience throughout the country. The company maintained a thorough-going commitment to presenting its work in the most modest spaces including rural communities and inner city venues not frequented by the mainstream theatregoer.
In 2008 Jonathan Holloway decided to move the company away from traditional modes of theatre-making. The company's Fall of Man presented at the 2009 Edinburgh Fringe demonstrated an entirely new form of intense site-sensitive work which is to be further developed in The Invisible Show to be seen in 2010.
