Actor Works was established by Daniel Brennan in January 2007 as a direct response to the sudden closure of the renowned Academy Drama School in Whitechapel.

After the death of The Academy’s founder and principal, Tim Reynolds, it was clear that the school could no longer run and the decision was made to close the school at the end of 2006.

Unfortunately, this meant that 70 students would be left without a school in which to train. This was when Daniel Brennan (who was working as a tutor at the Academy) formulated the idea of setting up a rescue package for them; hiring rooms from Pollyanna Training Theatre and Bishop Challoner School in which to run classes until the students’ intended graduation dates in the summers of 2007 and 2008.

During this time, it was becoming clear that the formula for Actor Works was working and it was decided that the school would continue beyond the graduation of The Academy’s former students. Since then, Actor Works has been auditioning and taking on students of its own and, in January 2009, the school moved into Raine House in Wapping and finally became a drama school in its own right and in its own home.
