Over the past 60 years radical publisher, John Calder, has been fighting the tide and the Establishment bringing literary talent to light in spite of threatened and actual censorship. Today the names Henry Miller, William Burroughs, Samuel Beckett (and many others) are known to us all largely thanks to Calder.
Over the years, John developed "THE THEATRE OF LITERATURE" using actors with the skill to lift the words and ideas off the page and inspire an audience in an intimate space with a lively discussion to follow. In the millennium year this "Theatre" found a home in London opposite the Young Vic in Waterloo at number 51 The Cut when the Calder Bookshop opened. Every week he introduced poetry, novels, short stories, plays, memoirs to audiences who knew the works and those with a wish to know. Now in his 80s, John is bringing the Theatre of Literature back to the bookshop for a once a month season on Mondays from 9th January to 11th June 2012.
