The Camden Fringe was set-up by Zena Barrie and Michelle Flower for It’s Alright For Some Ltd, who produced comedy at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival from 2002 - 2006 and started running the Etcetera Theatre in Camden since the beginning of 2004.

The first Camden Fringe took place in August 2006 at the Etcetera Theatre and included 57 performances by 22 acts over a 4 week period. It has grown steadily since then. In 2007 Liberties (now known as the Camden Head) was added as a cabaret style venue and in 2008 the Camden People’s Theatre joined in with the fun. There were 301 performances across the 3 venues in 2008.

The Camden Fringe Ltd was incorporated as a limited company in January 2009. In 2009 The Roundhouse studio was added as a 4th venue and 399 performances of 120 different shows happened. 10,600 tickets were sold.

The 2010 Camden Fringe was made of 652 performances in 8 venues (The New Diorama, Lion & Unicorn, Sheephaven Bay and Upstairs at the Gatehouse all joined the ranks) and ticket sales were up 30% on the previous year.

The Camden Fringe aims to give anyone the chance to perform and showcase their talents, from very experienced performers and companies to ambitious newcomers.

"An edgy mix of comedy, theatre, dance and a bunch of other cool stuff, dotted around some of Camden's best known venues. From humble beginnings, the Camden Fringe is now a rip-roaring event that gets bigger every year."
TNT Magazine

"The Camden Fringe gets set to kick cultural arse this summer with 8 venues, 208 shows and in excess of 700 performances throughout August"
Londonist

"Best way to think of the Camden Fringe is one of those lovely niche festivals like Secret Garden Party or Green Man, to the Glastonbury of Edinburgh. Ie, there's some good shit, and it's a darn sight less hassle (and money) than its big bro."
London is Funny

"An increasingly important platform for experimental new work: in true fringe spirit you can bank on encountering imagination that's run riot and the odd undiscovered gem"
Metro

"Edinburgh's mighty Fringe may be of international repute, but its rival in the south is gaining in confidence with every year. This rapidly growing festival serves as something of an incubator for its rival, attracting and fostering a host of new talent each year. Want to find the Ricky Gervais, Stewart Lee or Jimmy Carr of tomorrow? Look no further."
