STURDY BEGGARS are a small group of actors who graduated from The Poor School. We take our name from the updated version of 'The Poor Law' of 1598, which determined the "Statute for the Punishment of Rogues, Vagabonds and Sturdy Beggars". This revised version of the law classified actors alongside prostitutes and criminals as being the lowest grade members of society but gave them particular dispensations for being the 'Deserving Poor' - those who were known to work hard with honesty and passion. From then on, actors were legally referred to as Sturdy Beggars.
