In a time in which media empires bombard us with spurious information and opinion, theatre has the opportunity to rediscover its historic role as a public space in which we can test and contest ideas about the world in which we live, as well as a place to celebrate our shared humanity.

UPSTART's mission is "to further the education of the public by developing and producing new works of theatre relating to contemporary issues".We seek to promote new plays which challenge, provoke and entertain their audience, which promote discussion and argument, and which stand as a challenge to more simplistic ways of viewing the world.

Our most recent production, LONDON CALLING, played at London's Theatre503 in March 2007. It brought together two plays - THE HIGH COST OF LIVING by Joanna Pinto and WATER SCULPTURES by Dawn King - exploring contemporary London life.

In 2006 we produced UNDISCOVERED, an evening of short plays by emerging writers, at the Etcetera Theatre in Camden Town;and THE 22ND JULY PROJECT, a piece of devised documentary theatre about the death of Jean Charles de Menezes at Stockwell tube station in July 2005.

Our BRIEF CHRONICLES season of rehearsed readings, taking place at a variety of venues around London, allows new writers to test their work through an immediate and challenging encounter with a group of actors, a director, and an audience. Visit the Brief Chronicles page to find out how you can participate.
