The York Shakespeare Project was set up at the beginning of the 21st Century with the intention of performing every play Shakespeare wrote within a 20-year period. A dedicated mix of professionals and amateurs work together to achieve this, staging their works in some fascinating venues around the city of York.

The cycle commenced in the spring of 2002 with a run of "Richard III", and since then they have been produced in approximate chronological order. There are generally two to three shows per year, performed in the summer and the winter.

The Project hires professional directors for each show, as well as doing community work to bring Shakespeare to a wide audience, with the aim of demonstrating how accessible it can be. Open auditions are held for every show, and while the performers are generally unpaid, the professional quality of their productions is a testament to their dedication and enthusiasm, and acts as a magnificent springboard for those who have not experienced participating in one of Shakespeare's works.
