York Theatre Royal's Young Actors Company was founded by artistic director Julian Ollive in 2008 for actors aged 18 - 25. It provides a number of performance opportunities over the course of the year, holding open auditions for each show, and maintaining the highest levels of professional standards in their work.

The company's inaugural work involved three site-specific pieces performed around the city of York in June 2008 for the Youth Mystery Plays. The success of these productions allowed the company to perform their devised piece "An Exact Science?" in York Theatre Royal's Studio Theatre in May 2009, and they followed this up with their Main House debut in October, with a production of Peter Schaffer's "Equus".

The Company has maintained its ethic of choosing the most interesting projects for its members, with a production of The Presnyakov Brothers' "Terrorism" and a collaboration with Belt Up Theatre, "Elsewhere", produced in 2010. The diversity of these productions has allowed a number of its members to use them as a bridge into the professional industry, with past members moving on to attend Italia Conti, Oxford School of Drama, Central School of Speech and Drama, and Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts.

"(Julian) Ollive's company is fast developing a reputation as a training spring board." - Kevin Berry, "The Stage", 17/06/10
