About me
Hi, my name is George and I am 21-year-old recent graduate. I want to start by explaining my passion of high quality audio. Whether it is a well-recorded album or crisp dialogue alongside imaginative sound effects, sonic perfection is a fascination of mine. My time at university has been great for developing my critical analysis of audio. It started with listening to music, I couldn’t just listen to the song, I had to critically break it down and analyze production techniques and values. As I learned more about sound for moving image and postproduction, this analysis started to happen whilst watching films and TV. Attempting to identify recording techniques and what was captured on location and what was ADR’d has now become a regular feature when viewing a film. A trip to the cinema is just as much (if not more) about the appreciation of audio quality, as it is the visual for me. Listening on monitors for whom the film was mixed for is a great experience, not to mention the wider frequency output opportunities, allowing for deeper bass that you can feel as well as hear.I’ve had a fairly straightforward path on my journey this far. It all started when I began playing drums at the age of 7. My love of playing the drums kept me focused on a music related path. As I grew older I developed an interest in the production of music. This led to me to undertake an A Level in music technology. During these two years it became clear that I had found my calling. I wanted to work behind the scenes in audio production. Naturally, from this I then applied to study Audio and Music production at University. It was such a great experience. Having access to world-class studios and the opportunity to collaborate on a wide variety of projects from music recording to location sound recording and editing audio for films only increased my drive for the area and opened my mind to other areas of audio. I then began to focus on the postproduction element of audio. For me it was what I felt most comfortable doing, what I felt was my strongest area of audio production. Of course I couldn’t help but get involved in the pre and production phases as to produce the best final product, it is essential for all every stage of production to be done properly.
The broad and extensive knowledge of audio production I have developed ranges from the capture of audio, including mic choice and acoustics, to an equally important side of the job; people skills. I pride myself on my people skills and how I deal with different situations. I believe in treating people how you wish to be treated yourself. Understanding the importance of diplomacy in difficult situations with clients is also a strong point of mine. If the client and engineer are on the same page, a successful end product will be far more achievable.
As well as the people skills, I believe my knowledge and experience of DAW’s is equally as strong. My DAW of choice is Pro Tools, however I have had experience on multiple other workstations and many of the skills needed are transferrable amongst the different software’s. Without a strong and comprehensive understanding of the fundamentals of audio, my understanding of Pro Tools wouldn’t be worth much. Similar to a previous point, if what is going into the program is not of good quality then It what comes out will not be good quality (although there’s things that can be done). Where possible I like to get involved in all stages of production. It makes it easier to problem solve further down the line and this also ensures a high level of quality that I am happy with. A high level of quality is what I always aim for. I am my own biggest critic and always aspire for more. I can’t settle for mediocrity and I want to be the best at what ever I do (audio related or not). This means I continuously push for the highest quality of output.
