About me
I am an award-winning writer/director based in London, currently developing a number of projects of varying scale across science, art and history subjects for companies including MGM and Netflix. In 25 years of TV production my work has been mostly in specialist factual docs, with some high-level drama doc and occasional drama. In both writing and directing, I am strongly story-led and focused on the inherent value of the subject and in many cases I believe I have set new standards in crafting compelling, accessible narratives from often complex and challenging material. For example, the feature-length drama-doc 'Ape To Man' won multiple awards, including script EMMY and National Academy of Sciences communication prize. On the drama side, I was series writer on History Channel’s blockbuster 10-part series 'The Bible'. This was the first time a full telling of the Old and New Testament had ever been attempted on screen; the record-breaking audience figures and nomination for Best Miniseries for Primetime Emmy attest to its success. I subsequently helped shape and develop the highly successful follow-up series ‘A.D’ for NBC and wrote the outline for National Geographic’s landmark film on 'Dian Fossey - Secrets in the Mist', directed by Oscar winner James Marsh and Zara Hayes.
I also recently wrote and directed an intense, deeply personal and challenging one-man play 'The Trials of Galileo', starring Tim Hardy, which has toured the UK, US and Europe, receiving widespread praise – “Passionate, intelligent, hilarious, chilling, this is drama that makes you think but also laugh and cry. Anyone who loves theater should see this show”. I have just completed a follow up piece – 'Galileo, the Pope’s Tale', which tells Galileo’s story from his adversary’s perspective, also to be performed by Tim Hardy. This will be a theatrical first where the mirror is flipped on the same story on the same night by the same actor, it promises to be challenging, thought-provoking and revelatory. I am also writing a short film to be produced this summer for next year’s festival circuit. To all my work I aim to bring not just a level of competent delivery but clarity, structure, wit and engagement.
