About me
Full list of credits, listening examples, and biography can be found at www.rupertcross.comAdditional information:
I am a composer working in the film, theatre and concert music industries.
Since January 2010 I have an Assistant and Music Programmer for Patrick Doyle at both Shepperton Studios and 20th Century Fox Studios in Los Angeles for the films Cinderella, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, Brave, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Thor, La Ligne Droite, Sarajevo and Sir Billi the Vet, the documentary Jig and the concert pieces Impressions of America and Tam O’Shanter.
I studied music composition with Michael Finnissy and Matthew Scott at the University of Southampton. I won both the Lytell prize and the Edward Wood award for my large chamber work Gently your touch awoke me once and the song cycle Goblin Market. My piece In Orbit Around was workshopped by the Gemini Quartet.
I won a scholarship from the Laurin and Arthur Glaze Trust and the Arts and Humanities Research Council to study postgraduate composition with Julian Anderson at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Whilst at the school my piece FFFF for violoncello and piano was premiered as part of the conservatoire's New Music Festival. My large orchestral piece Cheeky Bitch was written as part of a concert to commemorate the life of George Martin, an alumni of the school.
In 2007 my orchestrations of the seminal Beatles album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band were performed at the Festival Internazionale della Musica in Milan by Jarvis Cocker, Badly Drawn Boy, Marianne Faithfull and the London Sinfonietta.
My piece Mockingbird for soprano singer and four instruments was premiered at the Wigmore Hall in 2008 whilst Nihilath for large ensemble was premiered at the City of London Festival in the same year. My song cycles Le Roi Soleil and Wrack, both performed at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, were described by the composer Brian Elias as "classy and well written."
In 2009 Pop Glitch, an electronic piece exploring natural clarinet harmonics, was premiered at the Barbican.
