In the days following the Soviet occupation of Poland, a battle-hardened German soldier find a way to reclaim his humanity

A farm outside Warsaw 1942, and Leon, a young Jewish orphan liberated from a concentration camp has come to recover his family's horse, Nessa. Two German soldiers, Hans and Albert, stranded by a lack of vehicles and fuel are trying to make their way home before the Russians arrive. Their only viable option is the horse, but Nessa will not let them come near her. When Hans discovers that Leon can calm Nessa, he is faced with a choice - will he let Leon go with Nessa, or will he take Nessa for himself. It is then that he realises what the war has done to him, and only then can he start to recover his humanity
