Days that Shook the World

2003, 30 minutes

The last 24 hours in the life of Donald Campbell who died in "Bluebird" on Lake Conniston.

This follows the last 24 hours in the life of Donald Campbell. Campbell was waiting at Lake Conniston for the perfect conditions on the lake to attempt to break his own speed record on water. In the early 1960`s press interest in his attempts was evaporating as "The Space Race" came alive. Campbell wanted to rekindle interest in himself and his boat "Bluebird" by passing the 300mph barrier on water. Campbell is shown to be short of money and sponsors, worried by his own superstitions, yet still determined and backed by a few loyal supporters. His attempt starts well on the first run but he has to do a 2nd run to gain the record. During the 2nd run "Bluebird" suddenly rises off the lake and crashes back into the water at great speed. Campbell is killed & his body is not recovered for over 30 years. The cause of the crash has long been speculated about. The film suggests a sudden cut in the fuel supply was the cause.
