Herbert's Biscuits

2018, 10 minutes

Herbert's Biscuits tells the story of a young man with a period.

Herbert is a normal adolescent, and like many, he is going through a difficult time he does not quite understand. To make matters worse, sanitary items have just started being taxed and he doesn't have enough pocket money to keep buying them in secret. As a young person he struggles to find his own voice and speak out about what is troubling and unjust in his eyes. This story plays on the absurdity of taxing sanitary items and classing them as luxury items and not a necessity. Especially when, in the UK for example, items such as Biscuits are considered essential and are so exempt from taxation. Sanitary items are not a luxury item and yet Period Poverty is rarely acknowledged and discussed. Therefore, in the world of Herbert's Biscuits people rarely have a voice and the absurdity of censoring real sanitary items is highlighted by its nonsensical replacement with biscuits.
