Hokum

'Hokum' ostensibly exists in this world, but it's a world with a seedy underbelly, inhabited by dark, foreboding characters.
The story has several, legitimate protagonists, although Donnie, the irascible thief, is clearly at its combustible centre. Each character in the movie is depicted by a Tarot card from the Major Arcana and, in essence, the movie itself is a card reading. Also known as the Trump Cards, the Major Arcana cards include 21 numbered cards and 'The Fool.' Donnie is represented by 'The Fool' card; the so-called unnumbered card (which is actually a 0 and/or number XXII). The Fool is the main character of the Major Arcana and makes his journey through each of the cards, eventually reaching the completion of his voyage with the World card. This is known as the Fool's Journey and is a helpful way of understanding the story line of the Major Arcana Tarot card meanings and, rather beautifully, the story and world of Hokum.
