The film follows Nell, A young woman who has recently experienced head trauma, losing almost all recollection of her past. Michael, Nell's father, brings in his friend Elaine to carry out a psychological profile in order to determine the degree of her condition and speed of her recovery. After the test, Nell overhears a conversation between the two, which alludes to Elaine not being completely honest about her profession. Michael seems under pressure to complete a task of some sort for an unknown group. The conversation reveals that Michael once had a daughter and indeed a family, one of many things being kept from Nell. Later on Nell lets her over-zealous curiosity and compulsive behaviour get the better of her and discovers through a private audio recording that she in fact a creation, with Michael's daughter being used as a template for Nell's personality. Michael seems untroubled by Nell's discovery of the truth. Nell panics as he tries to comfort her and she lashes out in an attempt to escape. Michael is rendered unconscious with his fate uncertain as Nell runs. Exhausted on the beach she looks out towards the waves and the city beyond. Now the time has come for Nell to decide her own fate...
