Dream Like journey between two reality

“MEAT” centres around a surreal and dreamlike journey that is undertaken to collect a living piece of flesh from a diabolical butcher. The film is an exploration of the possibility of the reconciliation of disparate human drives and desires, using strong, archetypal characters and referencing Dante’s Divine Comedy. The film starts on a wintry coastline where a girl is collecting stones. An older woman with white hair, standing in the garden of her cliffside cottage above appears to summon the girl. There seems to be a telepathic link between the two as a set of keys is magically exchanged. The girl uses the keys and drives off in a tiny old-fashioned car. She seems to be in some mental anguish as she clenches the wheel. Before long she continues driving and reaches a junction with a deserted highway. Looking left and then right the grey road stretches to infinity in both directions. Out of nowhere a car speeds past. The little car tentatively pulls out onto the highway. After driving a long way down the highway the car enters a tunnel. Next the girl is seen walking through an industrial area. Inside an abandoned building she is confronted by a host of demons and at their centre a diabolical butcher hacking at pieces of meat with a giant cleaver. The butcher hacks off a large piece of flesh and places it in one bowl of a set of scales on the countertop. He yells as the scales drop on the side of the meat. A woman appears by the counter and proceeds to place handfuls of beans in the other bowl to counter-balance the meat. The butcher yells and screams. The meat is then wrapped in paper and handed to the girl who leaves to drive back to the cottage by the coast. Throughout the journey the piece of meat whines and wriggles on the back seat. In the cottage the girl lays the meat in a basket before going to bed. In the morning she finds that the meat is rotten. She drives out into the country and discards the meat by the side of the road.
